The Platinum Jubilee plans for St Wenn and Withiel are progressing well! Most things are in hand, but we are relying on the community to come together and really make the effort to get involved. Afterall, with everything that we have had to deal with over the last couple of years, we need some excuse to celebrate something!
Flower tubs Interest in sponsoring flower tubs has been marvellous in St Wenn! We remind those who have expressed interest but have yet to pay their sponsorship to do so as soon as possible! The deadline for sponsoring a tub at £20 each will be the 10th May. Advertising can either be on a board or placard in or by the side of the tub. Flowers are being sourced by our dear friends, Mark and Linda Lawlor of Bodmin Plant & Herb Nursery. We are truly grateful to The Green Waste Company at Victoria for supplying the compost.
Community Plant-up and Parish tidy
We have had to change the date of holding our community plant-up of the tubs! Instead of the 22nd May, we are holding this now in St Wenn Car Park on Sunday 15th May from 2pm onwards. Please bring a trowel, gardening gloves, plant food and some empty water bottles (to act as water reservoirs). Children of all ages are urged to join in too! The Withiel Plant-up will take place at the same date and time on the Withiel Hall car park.
It may be ambitious, but we hope to hold a parish tidy on the same day! ‘Clean for the Queen’ will be an opportunity to enjoy a walk and collect litter at the same time. Bin bags will be available but please bring some gloves (and litter pickers if you have any) for hygiene and safety purposes Let’s see if everyone can join in and make our parish clean and tidy! If you can’t join in on Sunday 15th May from 2pm, do your bit by ensuring your recycling/bin waste is packed safely (away from birds or vermin) and do a litter pick just outside your house. If we all do our bit, we can enjoy our beautiful countryside!
To reward everyone for their efforts, whether it be planting or tidying, tea and plenty of cake will be available in the hall afterwards!
Decorations Both parishes are encouraging people to decorate their houses with bunting, flags and flowers in time for the Jubilee extended weekend. Why not decorate in the Cornish Colours or the traditional red, white and blue! Build a scarecrow to the theme ‘Decades- 1952 to 2022’. This could be a famous person, band or it could depict the fashion or a film. You could really go to town if you want to! Photographs of your scarecrow should be uploaded onto the St Wenn and Withiel Community Facebook page. The most ‘likes’ could be in for a prize!
Tree planting Tree planting will take place now in the Autumn at St Wenn. Each registered household will have the opportunity to plant a tree in their garden OR choose to donate their tree for a community plant. The Jubilee Woodland will be created within Enigma Wood, enabling everyone to enjoy this community space and will form part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Project. More details to follow.
Platinum Jubilee Patchwork Quilt
We are thrilled to announce that the St Wenn Quilting group will be working hard over the next couple of months on a Jubilee piece, as they did for the WW1 Commemoration. The finished article will be proudly displayed in the Church at St Wenn. Thanks to all involved – can’t wait to see the finished article!

Covid and the necessary restrictions have meant that many fund-raising opportunities have been prevented from happening. Consequently, with the aim of the Jubilee is to bring our communities together, we are suggesting that any profits from the Jubilee events be retained by the organising groups
A lot of hard work and effort goes in to staging these many events and whilst we do our best to mitigate any risk of damage or injury, we encourage you to participate and join whole-heatedly but we also encourage you to be mindful of your own safety and that of others around you.
