The annual duck race at Whitehay took place on Friday 6th August. The event was blessed by good weather and the two hundred or so who attended enjoyed a barbeque and bar, a tombola and raffle and an entertaining and popular human ‘fruit machine’. Seven hundred and fifty ducks then entered the water, making stately progress along the tree-lined stream and providing an exciting photo finish. Prize money of £175 was distributed to those who had purchased the first three ducks to complete the course.
Many thanks to members and friends of Ruthern Valley Players for the hard work that went into organising and putting on a memorable community event. And many thanks to the hosts, Julian and Cherry Lilley. The duck race generated over £2,000 which has been divided between Withiel Church, Cornwall’s Air Ambulance and the Ruthern Valley Players as they plan their 2024 pantomime, ‘Only Beasts and Beauty’, which takes place over the last weekend of November.
