Our president, Judy Lobb, introduced her daughter Rebecca as our speaker for the February meeting. Rebecca is a Year 6 primary school teacher at Trevisker, near Newquay. It turned out to be an in-depth talk about how the school operates and Rebecca explained her role, which is far more involved than just standing in front of the class and marking homework. There are some very long days, leaving home at 6.30am and often not getting back until 10 or 11 at night.
Rebecca went on to talk about the pressure and stresses of the Ofsted inspections, which I thought sounded quite intimidating. Safeguarding was explained and there is also a therapy dog who goes in twice a week and has been found to be extremely beneficial to pupils who are anxious or unsettled.
There are school trips to various places round the county and a lot of sports classes, including a strong cycling group which Rebecca started up. Members asked questions and everyone took part. I think our attention to the teacher would have earned stars!
Rebecca then judged the competition,
